FREQUENT ASKED QUESTIONS
Q:
Machine is beeping all the time
A:
There are a variety of solutions to this problem:
- Turn off the
machine, unplug from the electrical outlet, wait 10 seconds,
replug the machine and turn it on.
- Is the
machine directly under a very bright light source (ie. Halogen
light), the machine needs to be moved to another location away
from the bright light source.
- Ensure
nothing is stuck inside the bill reader. Reader must be clear
of any paper or foreign objects.
- Is the
machine in a cold environment, i.e. near an open window. The
machine needs to operate at room temperature. If the machine
is cold, it will not function properly.
- If the
problem persist, contact the number at the back of the unit.
Q:
I slide a bill which I know is real, yet the machine still beeps.
Why?
A:
Place the questioned bill under the blue UV light…is it glowing?
Compare this questioned bill with another bill (which doesn't
beep) beside it. Does the questioned bill glower brighter than the
non-beeping bill? Perhaps the bill has tape on it and the glow
from the tape (as you can see under the UV light) is causing the
machine to beep…by sliding the portion of the bill without the
tape under the reader the machine should not beep. Money has many
levels of security features, the machine's bill reader is
questioning the validity of the currency because of its high level
of reflection from the paper - the bill did not pass that one
level of security. Just because it does not pass that one level of
security does not automatically make the bill fake, it just adds
doubt and question to the authenticity of the bill. You need to
perform further checks on the bill to ensure it is real. On the
other hand, if a bill does NOT beep, definitely does NOT mean that
the bill is genuine - it just means it has passed that ONE level
of security…other security features should be checked.
Q:
Is the bill reader 100% accurate in detecting all counterfeit
bills? If the bill does not beep does this mean that the bill is
real?
A:
No. Under no circumstances should a user believe that a bill is
100% legitimate just because the bill reader does not beep. A
non-beeping bill just indicates to the user that it has passed one
level of security, other features should be further verified to
ensure authenticity.
Q:
Why should I buy this machine…there are so many other machines
in the marketplace, some with brighter bulbs, others with two
bulbs…why the Counter-Detect™?
A:
Most machines in the marketplace, including the Counter-Detect™,
utilizes the blue UV fluorescent light. The UV light is highly
effective in detecting the hidden security features on the bill,
such as the fluorescent inks (ie. The blue Coat of Arms and Text
on the Cdn five and ten dollar notes) and the red fibre leafs.
However, the process of checking for these features on the note
requires many factors - Knowledge in what to look for, Patience to
look for these features, and the time to do it. In a busy retail
environment, cashiers would not have the time or patience to check
every bill, especially if there is a large lineup of customers.
Furthermore, with the high "turn over" of staff and the
lack of experienced cashiers, educating every staff member on what
to look for in note is not realistic and not being properly done.
As a result, most establishments with the standard UV counterfeit
detectors, only checks the higher denomination bill -- ignoring
the fives, tens and twenties. Unfortunately, most counterfeit
notes are the tens and twenties. Our unique bill reader solves
this problem. With Counter-Detect™, all bills including the
fives, tens and twenties can be quickly and easy verified thru our
bill reader. Although, the reader is not 100% accurate, at least
one level of security on the note is being verified, while in the
past these notes where not being verified at all. Some level of
security is better than no level of security. Remember, the Counter-Detect™
is also equipped with a blue UV fluorescent light
(similar to the other detectors) so if time permits, the other
security features can be further verified thru the UV light.
Counter-Detect™'s unique bill reader makes it feasible and
practical for cashiers to perform at least some level of
verification on notes even during high customer traffic situations
with little training required. Don't settle for a regular detector
with only one feature - the blue UV light, the Counter-Detect™ has both the Blue UV fluorescent light and the unique bill reader.
Q:
What are the other security features found in legitimate money?
A:
Check out the Bank of Canada website at : http://www.bankofcanada.ca/en/banknotes/counterfeit/index.html
or call for more information at 1.888.513.8212. In addition
to using the counter detector, you can check the $20, $50 and $100
bills by snatching the left collar for "bumpy ridges",
comparing it to the smooth, non-bumpy surface found at the corner
of the bills. Q:
How long does the bulb on the Counter Detector last? A:
Many factors affect the live of the UV bulb such as temperature,
humidity and environment. Typically, the UV bulb has around
a 3,000 hour lifespan and will need to be changed every 3-5
months. If the unit is sent to one of our service centers,
the unit will be cleaned and calibrated in addition to installing
the new bulb - like any fine machinery, cleaning and
re-calibration of the unit is very important and necessary step in
keeping your unit in top working condition. Q:
What do I say to the customer when the bill "beeps"
through the reader? A:
This can be a very sensitive issue; therefore, it is important
that your staff know how to handle this situation. First, a
"beeping" bill does not mean that the bill is
counterfeit... it only means that the bill is questionable.
Secondly, it time permits, further checks on the bill should be
done to verify authenticity. Otherwise, a common statement
to the customer would be as follows:
"Sorry, your bill is questionable, our financial institution
will not allow us to accept this bill." Legally, if the
bill is counterfeit it must be kept by our business and reported
to the police. Q:
The Counter Detector is great for a retail/restaurant location,
but what about a devise for the general public or for users who do
not have access to electricity and need portability? A:
In addition to the plug in CD100 Counter Detector, other
counterfeit devices are available such as small portable UV key
chains CD100 (great for travelers and delivery personal) and the
new CD500 Porta Check Counter-Detect with a mini UV fluorescent tube
with built in flashlight. Check out our website at www.counter-detector.com
